Devlog #0 - Ideas, Conception, Direction
Introduction and Inspiration
Despite finishing Five Night's at DanDy's last winter, I feel like I'm not quite done in the horror genre. I still would like to make a game that scratches the Halloween itch I have, and felt like another foray into the game dev world could do me well. So, I decided it was time to make an old, PSX style horror game. Fun fact, I LOVE haunted houses but am not really a horror guy. There are a few thrillers that tickle my fancy, but generally I tend to stay away from the genre (at least for movies). So, I initially wanted a project that put me in control of the scares, and started thinking about what thrillers I could pull from. So, I decided to base the premise of this game around John Carpenter's The Thing.
Style
The game will be a survival horror game set in an arctic/anarctic environment. Additionally, since I don't have much modeling skills, I've chosen to rely on PSXEffects to add a clunky, low poly style to the game. I haven't worked much with shaders, lighting, etc, but I think this will be a good introduction to familiarizing myself with those tools.
Planned Features
Movement (duh), Interactable Objects (a classic), Logic Puzzle based gameplay, Exploration, NPC choices/conversations that affect gameplay, more to be determined
Overview
This isn't much, but I don't have too much yet. Keep your eyes peeled, and share with some friends!
